January 2009 Faculty Workshop on Computational Thinking at Towson University
The primary goal of this NSF-funded project is to develop at least three new Computational Thinking courses, to be (eventually) offered as part of Toswon's revised University Core -the proposed general education curriculum that may go into place in Fall 2010.
On January 16, 2009, we will hold a workshop for interested faculty. This goal for this workshop will be to develop proposals for computational thinking courses in specific disciplines - "Computational Thinking in XXX". Faculty will be encouraged to develop propsoals for courses. Two faculty will be chosen as "Faculty Fellows", and provided with summer stipend suppor to develop their classses.
As the new University Core will not be in place for the 2009-2010 academic year, we will explore alternative options for offering these classes in the interim. Towson's Honors College has indicated an interest in receiving proposals for Honors Seminars. Other possibilities include repurposing of existing classes and the creation of special topics classes.
The timeline for preparing proposals and offering courses is as follows:
- February 15Interested faculty submit brief (2-page) course proposals to project investigators.
- March 1: Faculty Fellows chosen
- April 1: Course proposals submitted to Honors College
- Summer 2009: Faculty Fellows work with project team to develop course materials
- Fall 2009 - Spring 2010: Initial course offerings and submission of courses for inclusion in new University Core.
Some materials for the workshop:
- Agenda
- Background on computational thinking
- Project status
- Slides on offering computational thinking courses
- Slides on the proposed course on everyday computational thinking
- Honors College forms for course submission
